![]() This was a project that Alan
Timmins had started with his son, as a school project to build a traditional
item with modern materials.Alan bought the project to me to ensure that the fretting and playability of the finished product would be up to a professional standard. We made four instruments between us, two Tricones, one Single Cone with a 14 fret body join and one Resonator Mandolin. Alan produced all the bodies and most of the metal work. I produced the necks and finger boards, finished the instruments and set them up. The graphics were produced by Chris Elliott of Elliott Signs. The first Tricone we produced is now played by Mike Cooper. The Single Cone is played by Dave Peabody. The Resonator mandolin was unfortunately stolen from a local music shop, where it was on display. ![]() ![]() Although this project has finished, I still have plans to produce a range of Resophonic Instruments in the future, using a combination of Carbon Fibre and attractive veneers for the bodies, to produce a more traditional looking instrument. The instruments alan and I produced were lighter than the original Nationals. The Carbon Fibre gave plenty of reflection and projection and had a good full sound. They were also, as Alan was fond of saying, "Bullet proof". |
